How secure is PortaCrypt?

PortaCrypt stores your data using strong AES-256 bit encryption. The encryption code uses CommonCrypto, an Apple library included in every macOS installation.

The safety of your document depends on your password strength!

Your data is saved alongside the decryption code in the same document. If someone can access this document he can try to brute force your password. Depending on the password strength, this can take from a couple of minutes to thousands of years. So having a good password is essential.

Security Tips:

  • Don't use simple passwords.
  • The more public your document is, the more secure your password needs to be.
  • If possible decrypt the document offline. PortaCrypt does not need an internet connection, and using it offline prevents password theft from key-loggers.
  • Store the document in a secure location.
  • Use HTTPS if you access the document on a web server.

I forgot my password, what should I do?

The encryption key used to encrypt your data is generated from your password using salted hashing, and PBKDF2 SHA-256 key derivation.

This means that your password is not stored in the document. If you have lost your password, it is not possible to access your data.
